Draft survey

A draft survey is used to determine the weight of cargo loaded or discharged from a ship by measuring changes in the ship’s draft (the vertical distance between the waterline and the keel). This survey is commonly employed in maritime shipping, especially for bulk cargo vessels, to assess the quantity of cargo loaded or unloaded.

It is always wise to have the hold checked thoroughly before the cargo is loaded. There can be contamination hiding in plain sight (like rust flakes on the side of the hold, remnants of previous cargo in corners, etc…) but also in the closing system of the hatches which can contaminate and discolor your merchandise.
